Movie Theater Adds Snack Subtitle Screen
A theater tries a simple screen that helps nervous customers order snacks.
A movie theater in Aoba City has added a new screen near its snack counter.
The screen does not show movie times. It shows “snack subtitles.”
When a customer points at popcorn, the screen shows a picture of popcorn and a simple sentence: “This is big. Please share.”
The theater made the screen for students who feel nervous when ordering.
“We wanted people to enjoy snacks before the movie starts,” a staff member said.
The screen also gives quiet advice. If someone buys a very large drink, it shows a small umbrella picture.
Students say the system is useful. One student said, “I forgot the word for nachos, but the screen understood my face.”
There has been one problem. The screen sometimes recommends popcorn to people who only came to use the bathroom.
The theater says the screen is still learning.
