Station Stairs Praise Every Step

A station staircase becomes too encouraging for morning commuters.

A train station in Kita City has tested smart stairs that encourage people to walk instead of using the escalator.

Small lights turn on with each step. A speaker also gives short compliments.

At first, passengers enjoyed messages such as “Good pace” and “Strong morning energy.”

However, the system became too enthusiastic after the seventh step.

One office worker said the stairs shouted, “Legendary effort,” while he was only going to buy coffee.

Several commuters felt embarrassed because the stairs praised them in front of strangers.

Station staff reduced the volume, but the stairs continued to flash brightly whenever someone carried a heavy bag.

“We wanted gentle encouragement, not a sports festival,” a staff member said.

The station will adjust the system this weekend. It may remove the highest praise level, which is currently called “hero mode.”

For now, many passengers are using the stairs only when they feel emotionally ready.
